Rhododendron × 'Dandy Man Color Wheel®' (also sold as Rhododendron 'Dandy Man Color Wheel®') gives you a changing spring display on a single evergreen shrub: buds show lipstick red, flowers open pink, and blooms age to clean white so you can see multiple stages at once.
Give your plant the conditions rhododendrons love and it will reward you for years. Site it where it can enjoy full sun to part sun in cooler areas, with afternoon shade in hotter sites; it can also handle shade where summers are intense. At maturity it typically reaches 4-8 feet tall and 4-8 feet wide, making it a strong specimen, background, or flowering hedge.
Plant in acidic, well-drained soil and keep the root zone cool with a 2-3 inch mulch layer. Water regularly during establishment and during dry spells, but avoid soggy, poorly drained spots. If you fertilize, choose a product formulated for acid-loving shrubs and apply lightly in spring.
Because it blooms on old wood, prune only right after flowering and only as needed to shape. Avoid late-season pruning that can remove next year's buds. In exposed areas, a sheltered location can help reduce winter wind stress on the foliage.
