Ilex, the hollies, provides some of the most enduring structure in temperate and subtropical gardens. The genus includes evergreen and deciduous shrubs and trees, with leaves that may be spiny, smooth, glossy, leathery, small, large, green, blue-green, or variegated. Evergreen hollies bring winter polish and shelter, while deciduous species reveal their berries on bare stems with striking clarity. The plants often have a formal dignity, yet their variation allows them to serve as clipped hedges, woodland shrubs, specimen trees, or fruiting thickets.

The flowers are small and pale, seldom ornamental to human eyes, but they are important to pollinators and to the production of fruit. Many hollies are dioecious, with male and female flowers on separate plants, so berry display usually requires a compatible male nearby. The fruits may be red, orange, yellow, black, or rarely other tones, and they can persist into winter, feeding birds after they soften or become more palatable. A holly's success often depends on mature proportion.
