Blue Holly 'Blue Princess' (Ilex × meserveae 'Blue Princess') gives you year-round structure with handsome, spiny, blue-green foliage and excellent winter interest. This is a female Meserve holly; when a compatible male pollinator is nearby, it sets bright red berries that persist into the cold season and draw birds to the garden.
Plant it where you want a durable evergreen screen, hedge, foundation accent, or specimen. In most landscapes it matures about 12-15 feet tall, with a broad, dense habit. The plant is dioecious, so plan on one male for every few female plants if you want reliable fruit set.
For best performance, give your holly full sun to part shade. You will get the best density and berry display with more sun, while some afternoon shade can be helpful in hotter or windier exposures. Provide moist, well-drained soil that stays on the acidic side, and mulch to keep roots cool and evenly moist.
As an evergreen, winter wind and winter drying can be the biggest challenges. Water deeply going into winter, especially during dry falls, and site it out of harsh, exposed wind when possible. Prune lightly after flowering (or in late winter) to shape, and avoid heavy pruning that removes the current season's fruiting wood.
