Powdery mildew is common on some lilacs late in the season but is often more cosmetic than fatal. Lilacs suit shrub borders, hedges, cottage gardens, and specimen placements near paths where fragrance can be enjoyed. Their beauty is brief but decisive: panicles of bloom, cool spring color, and scent held in woody permanence.

Lilacs reward a placement that admits their seasonality. They are not evergreen screens or all-year focal points, but shrubs whose brief flowering can define a part of spring. Underplanting with bulbs, geraniums, or later perennials keeps the ground alive before and after bloom, while renewal pruning preserves the fragrance-bearing wood.
