Drought stress, winter wind, deer browsing, and poorly drained soils can cause browning or decline. Cultivar choice is critical because mature size varies enormously, and cramped plants often become misshapen or difficult to maintain. Arborvitae is frequently overused as a narrow privacy solution, but it is most graceful when spacing and mature size are respected. A hedge with room to breathe remains green to the base and reads as a calm wall; cramped plants become stressed, brown, and apologetic.
