Use Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd' (often sold as Emerald Green arborvitae) when you want a neat, narrow evergreen screen without constant pruning. You get dense, bright green foliage held in flat sprays and a naturally tight, pyramidal-to-columnar outline that looks crisp year-round.
Plant in full sun to part shade for the fullest growth. In hotter climates, a little afternoon shade can help reduce stress. Choose a spot with well-drained soil and room for air movement. For a hedge, space plants so the foliage can knit together over time while still allowing light to reach the lower branches.
After planting, water deeply and consistently through the first growing season so the root ball and surrounding soil stay evenly moist. Mulch to moderate soil temperature and reduce moisture loss, but keep mulch pulled back from the trunk. Once established, this arborvitae is usually easy to maintain and responds best to minimal pruning; remove only dead or wayward tips as needed to keep the natural shape.
In winter, heavy snow or ice can splay branches. Brush off accumulations gently and consider tying plants loosely in exposed sites. Protect from drying winds if you see winter browning, and keep the soil from going dry during extended winter thaws. With steady moisture and good light, it makes a dependable, evergreen living fence.
