Plant it in full sun to part shade for best density. Choose a site with well-drained soil and room for airflow, then water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. After it is established, keep soil evenly moist during extended dry spells, especially in hot or windy locations.

Because of its naturally tidy form, pruning is usually minimal. If you need to refine the outline, lightly trim in late spring or early summer, avoiding cuts into old bare wood. Mulch over the root zone to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperatures, keeping mulch a few inches away from the trunk.
