Does Digitalis Prefer Full Sun or Part Sun?
Most Digitalis species (foxgloves) actually prefer part sun — meaning about 3–6 hours of sunlight per day, ideally morning sun with some afternoon shade. They can tolerate full sun in cooler climates, but in hotter areas, too much direct, blazing sun can stress them out, causing drooping, quicker blooming (and faster fading), and even sunburn on the leaves.
In general:
- Cooler zones (like USDA 3–6): Full sun or part sun is fine.
- Warmer zones (7+): Definitely give them some afternoon shade.
Good soil moisture makes a big difference — foxgloves like it moist but well-drained, not baked dry!
Bonus tip: If you're growing a perennial type like Digitalis purpurea (even though it's technically a biennial), protecting it from harsh afternoon sun can help it reseed better and stick around longer.
