Grow Actaea simplex 'Pink Spike' (bugbane) for dramatic, dark foliage and late-season flower spikes that lift above the clump when many perennials are fading. This herbaceous perennial typically reaches about 24-48 inches tall and forms a tidy mound that fits well toward the back of a shady border or as a specimen in a woodland garden.
Give your plant humus-rich soil that stays evenly moist, with good drainage. It performs best in partial shade, dappled shade, or full shade, and appreciates shelter from drying winds and hot afternoon sun. Mulch to keep roots cool and conserve moisture, and water during dry stretches so the soil does not fully dry out.
In late summer through fall, slender racemes carry soft pink, bottlebrush-like blooms that can be lightly fragrant and attractive to pollinators. Cut spent flower stems if you prefer a neat look, or leave them to extend seasonal interest. Divide mature clumps in early spring if you want to propagate or manage size.
Note: Actaea can be poisonous if ingested, so site it away from curious pets and children. Once established, this selection is often valued for its strong garden presence and for being less appealing to browsing deer and rabbits in many landscapes.
