Agastache foeniculum (anise hyssop) is a hardy, aromatic perennial that brings vertical color, long-lasting bloom, and strong wildlife value to your garden.
It forms tidy clumps of green, licorice-scented foliage topped with dense flower spikes in summer. The blooms are rich in nectar and draw in bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, while the seed heads can be of interest later in the season.
Plant it in full sun for the best flowering, though it will tolerate part shade. Choose well-drained soil and avoid sites that stay wet, especially in winter. Once established, it handles periodic dryness well, making it a solid choice for low-water areas or mixed borders.
Expect mature height of about 24 to 48 inches, with a spread of roughly 18 to 36 inches. Give it room for good air circulation, and you will get a fuller plant with cleaner foliage through the season.
For care, water regularly during establishment, then reduce as roots develop. Cut stems back in late winter or early spring before new growth starts, and remove spent flower spikes if you want a tidier look. This species is also valued for its fragrant leaves, which can be enjoyed up close along paths, patios, and seating areas.
