Standing Ovation serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia 'Standing Ovation') gives you four-season interest in a tall, narrow footprint. In spring, you get clusters of white flowers that stand out against fresh green foliage. Those blooms are followed by juicy purple berries that you can eat fresh or use in jams and baking, and they also draw birds to the garden. As the season cools, the foliage turns showy red tones for a strong fall finish.
Plant it where you want a vertical accent, a living screen, or a hedge line without a wide spread. At maturity it typically reaches 12-15 feet tall and about 3-4 feet wide (36-48 inches), so it fits nicely along fences, driveways, or the edges of beds. You will get the best flowering and fruiting in full sun, but it also performs well in part shade.
Grow Standing Ovation serviceberry in average to moist, well-drained soil. Water regularly during the first season to help it establish, then provide supplemental water during extended dry spells. Avoid constantly wet sites. A light spring mulch helps conserve moisture and reduces competition around the root zone.
Pruning is usually minimal. If you want to maintain a clean, upright look, remove dead or crossing stems and thin selectively after flowering or during dormancy. As with other serviceberries, watch for occasional leaf spots, rusts, or fire blight; good spacing and airflow help reduce pressure.
