Berry Scape(R) red chokeberry (Aronia arbutifolia 'Berry Scape®') brings multi-season interest to your landscape in a tidy, compact form. In spring, you get clusters of small white flowers; by late summer into fall, the plant carries showy red berries. As temperatures cool, the foliage can shift into rich red tones, giving you another layer of color as the season changes.
Plant it where you can enjoy the display up close: along foundations, in mixed shrub borders, or in mass plantings. Full sun to part shade works well; more sun generally encourages the best flowering, fruiting, and fall color. Give it average to consistently moist soil, and it will also handle periodically wet spots once established. Space plants based on mature spread so air can circulate and the shrub can fill in naturally.
Water regularly during the first growing season to help roots establish. After that, provide supplemental water during extended dry spells, especially in hotter exposures. A 2-3 inch layer of mulch over the root zone helps even out soil moisture; keep mulch a few inches back from the stems. You can feed lightly in spring if your soil is very lean, but this shrub usually performs well without heavy fertilizing.
Prune in late winter to early spring if you want to shape the plant or remove older stems. Because it can sucker over time, you can thin or remove shoots to keep the clump the size you want. Leave some fruit if you like winter interest and want to support birds that visit the berries as the season progresses.
