You get dense, fine foliage that stays neat and tidy, plus upright flower spikes in shades of pink to purple that add bright late-season interest and support pollinators such as bees.

Plant it in full sun to partial shade and give it moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Sandy or rocky sites with good drainage are ideal. Once established it can handle short dry spells, but it looks best with even moisture, especially in containers and during hot, windy weather. Avoid heavy clay and soggy spots that can lead to root problems.

Expect a mature size around 12-24 inches tall with a similar spread. To keep the plant dense and prevent legginess, lightly shear or tip-prune in early spring, removing the previous season's spent flower spikes while staying out of old, bare wood. Little fertilizer is needed; if you feed at all, use a light, acid-forming fertilizer suited to ericaceous plants.
