If you want late-season color with minimal fuss, Caryopteris × cland. 'Sapphire Surf™' is an easy choice. This compact bluebeard forms a low, mounded shrub with aromatic foliage and vivid blue flowers from mid- to late summer into early fall. At maturity it typically reaches about 24-36 inches tall and can spread roughly 36-48 inches, making it a strong fit for the front of shrub borders, mixed beds, and sunny foundation plantings.

Plant it where it will receive full sun for best flowering, and give it average, well-drained soil. Once established, it tolerates some drought, but it will not perform well in wet, poorly drained sites. In colder areas within its range (generally USDA Zones 6-9), expect winter dieback; the roots are hardy and will push new stems in spring, and flowering occurs on new growth.

For best shape and bloom, prune back in late winter or early spring before growth begins. The fragrant leaves add interest whenever you brush past the plant, and the blue flowers are a magnet for butterflies and other pollinators when many other shrubs have finished their main display.
