Dicentra spectabilis (Bleeding Heart) is a classic spring shade-garden perennial, loved for its arching stems lined with dangling, heart-shaped flowers. You will get the best show in part shade to full shade, where the plant can enjoy cool roots and protection from hot afternoon sun.

Plant it in rich, moisture-retentive, well-drained soil and water during dry spells so it does not dry out while actively growing. A layer of compost or leaf mold each spring helps keep the soil evenly moist and encourages strong flowering stems 30-36 inches tall.
