Use Geum fragarioides (Barren Strawberry) where you want a neat, low groundcover with spring color and year-round foliage. This forms a low, evergreen strawberry-like leaf carpet 4-6 in. tall, spreading 12-18 in. via thick, underground rhizomes in sun to part shade, ideal for woodland edges. It sends up small yellow flowers in spring, giving you early-season interest before many woodland plants wake up.

Plant it in sun to part shade. In warmer climates, give it afternoon shade; in cooler climates it tolerates more sun. It performs best in well-drained soil with organic matter, but once established it can handle short dry spells. Water regularly the first season so the roots knit in, then water during extended droughts or when grown beneath thirsty trees.

At maturity it stays about 4-6 inches tall and spreads to roughly 12-18 inches, gradually filling in by creeping stems. Space plants about a foot apart for a unified look. Use it along paths, at the front of shaded beds, on gentle banks, or as a living carpet under open-canopy trees and shrubs.

Keep maintenance simple: remove winter-worn leaves in late winter, top-dress with compost in spring, and mulch lightly to conserve moisture. Deer generally avoid it, and the evergreen foliage keeps a clean, finished look through much of the year.
