Helenium autumnale (common sneezeweed) is a native perennial valued for late-season color and pollinator activity. You will see branching stems topped with rounded centers and drooping, toothed rays in shades of yellow to orange, often continuing from late summer into fall. At maturity it typically reaches about 36-60 inches tall and forms a substantial clump, making it easy to spot in meadow plantings and naturalized gardens.

Give it full sun for the strongest flowering, though it will also handle partial shade, especially where summers are hot. This plant naturally occurs in moist habitats, so aim for consistently moist soil; it also tolerates periodically wet spots. Use it along ponds and swales, in rain gardens, or anywhere you can keep the root zone from drying out for long periods.

For best performance, water during dry spells, mulch lightly to conserve moisture, and consider cutting back in early summer to encourage branching and a fuller display. Taller stems can benefit from neighboring plants for support, or you can stake early. Leave some seedheads to extend seasonal interest and provide food value for birds, then cut back after hard frost or in early spring.
