With its bold, ruffled blooms and strong, upright fans, Iris germanica 'Bernice's Legacy' is a classic tall bearded iris for perennial borders and cutting gardens. You will get the best flowering in full sun, but it can also perform in part shade when the soil drains well.

Plant the rhizomes shallowly, with the top of the rhizome at or just above the soil surface, and give each plant enough room for airflow and future clumping. Choose a site with good drainage and avoid heavy mulching directly over the rhizomes, which can encourage rot. Water to establish, then let the soil dry slightly between waterings once growth is underway.

At maturity, this cultivar typically blooms on sturdy stems around 30-34 inches tall, rising above sword-like foliage that adds structure even when the plant is not in flower. The blossoms are showy and often fragrant, making them excellent for bouquets. Once established, tall bearded irises handle short dry spells well and are generally unappealing to deer, which helps keep the display intact in many landscapes.

After flowering, remove spent bloom stalks and keep the bed tidy to reduce disease pressure. Divide and replant crowded clumps in mid- to late summer to refresh vigor and improve blooming. A light feeding in early spring and again after bloom can also support strong growth and flower production year after year.
