Lespedeza bicolor 'Yakushima' (Bush Clover 'Yakushima') is a compact, dwarf form of shrub lespedeza that brings late-season color when many plants are fading. You get a dense, rounded mound with blue-green, trifoliate foliage and a profusion of pea-like, violet-purple flowers from late summer into early fall. Mature size is typically about 12-24 inches tall with a similar spread, making it easy to tuck into borders, mass plantings, and naturalized edges.
Plant it where you can give it full sun to part shade and well-drained soil. It performs especially well in lean, drier soils and does not need rich amendments to look good. Once established, it handles drought well and is useful on slopes and banks where drainage is fast and conditions can be tough.
Because it blooms on new growth, you can prune in late winter to early spring to shape the plant and encourage fresh shoots. In colder climates, top growth can die back in winter; simply cut it back and let it regrow. Use it in mixed shrub beds, meadow-style plantings, or as a small, tidy focal mound that carries the garden through late summer.
As with many Lespedeza bicolor selections, be mindful of self-seeding in favorable conditions and follow local guidance for your area.
