Plant Liatris spicata 'Alba' where you want strong, vertical summer color and a tidy clump of grassy foliage. This white-flowering selection of dense blazing star produces upright spikes that open from the top down and stand out in borders, pollinator plantings, and native-style beds.
In your garden, give it full sun for the strongest stems and best bloom. Expect mature plants to reach roughly 24-36 inches tall and about 12-24 inches wide, forming a clump rather than running. The narrow leaves stay neat through the season and provide good texture even before flowering begins.
Once established, it handles typical summer conditions well, but it performs best in average to moist, well-drained soil. Water during prolonged dry spells the first season, then let the plant’s corm-based growth settle in for reliable return blooms. Avoid winter-wet sites that stay soggy, especially in colder climates.
The showy spikes are excellent for cutting and for dried arrangements, and they provide late-season garden interest as they fade. If you leave some spent flower stalks standing, you may also enjoy additional wildlife value from seed and structure into fall. Space plants so air can move through the clumps and you’ll find this is a low-fuss perennial that fits easily into mixed plantings.
