Ligustrum amurense (Amur Privet) is a hardy, deciduous privet often used where you want a dense screen, hedge, or informal boundary. You can expect upright, multi-stemmed growth and dependable performance in a wide range of soils and conditions. In late spring to early summer, small white flowers may appear, followed by dark berries that can persist into colder weather. Mature size is commonly around 12-15 feet tall with an 8-15 foot spread, so give it room if you do not plan to shear it tightly.
Plant in full sun to partial shade for best growth and density. Choose a spot with reasonably draining soil, then water regularly during establishment; once rooted, it can handle periods of dryness better than many shrubs. Mulching helps stabilize soil moisture and reduces competition from nearby plants without the need for frequent cultivation.
Prune to shape after flowering, or shear during the growing season if you are maintaining a formal hedge. It responds well to hard rejuvenation pruning when needed, and you can thin older stems to open the center and encourage fresh new growth.
Before planting, check local guidance: in some regions privets can spread by seed and may be considered invasive. If that is a concern where you garden, consider using alternative shrubs for hedging or remove spent flowers/berries to limit reseeding.
