Passiflora incarnata (Maypop) is a vigorous, fast-growing perennial passionflower vine valued for its dramatic purple-and-white blooms and its edible maypop fruit. In colder winters it typically dies back to the ground and re-sprouts from the roots, while in warmer regions it can behave more woody. Give it a sturdy trellis, fence, arbor, or other support and enough room to roam, because it can spread by root suckers and cover a wide area over time.
Plant in well-drained soil and water regularly until established. Once rooted in, it tolerates short dry spells, but it flowers and fruits best with consistent moisture during active growth. Provide full sun for best bloom, though it will also grow well in part shade (especially where summers are hot). Mulching helps keep roots cooler and can improve winter survival in colder parts of its range.
Maypop is a standout for wildlife gardens. The flowers provide nectar for pollinators, and the plant serves as a host for butterfly larvae. Hummingbirds may also visit the blooms, and ripe fruit can be eaten fresh or used in recipes. If you want to limit spread, site it where runners are easy to spot and remove, or install root barriers and keep edges trimmed.
For care, train new shoots onto the support, then prune or thin as needed in late winter or early spring before strong growth begins. Expect a lush, seasonal display in summer with intriguing fruit later in the season when plants are well established.
