Canby's Mountain Lover (Paxistima canbyi) is a low, prostrate evergreen shrub that you can use as a refined groundcover in rock gardens, woodland edges, and other small-scale plantings where neat texture matters.
In time, it forms a dense, spreading mat of glossy, dark green leaves that can take on bronzy or purplish tones in cool weather. Expect mature plants around 8-12 inches tall with a spread near 24-36 inches, creating a tidy, nearly ground-hugging look.
Give it well-drained soil and a protected site, especially where winters are windy. It tolerates sun to part shade, but it is often easiest to manage with morning sun and afternoon shade or bright woodland light. Water regularly as it establishes, then keep the soil lightly moist but not soggy; good drainage is key.
Prune lightly if you want a tighter outline or to encourage denser growth. Use it in small drifts along paths, in crevices and ledges, or as an evergreen accent at the front of a bed where you want year-round structure without a tall shrub.
