Jewel black raspberry (Rubus 'Jewel') is a vigorous, floricane-fruiting bramble grown for heavy crops of glossy black berries with rich, classic black raspberry flavor. You will get the best production in a sunny site, but the plant can handle some light shade, especially where summers are hot. Expect upright to arching canes that form a productive patch when trained and pruned well.
Plant in well-drained, fertile soil and keep moisture consistent, especially from bloom through harvest. Mulch helps conserve moisture and keeps the root zone cooler. Allow room for air movement to reduce disease pressure, and use a simple trellis or a few wires to keep canes upright and make harvest easier. Mature plants typically reach about 48-72 inches tall, with a similar spread when allowed to fill in.
Prune for long-term performance: remove spent fruiting canes at ground level after harvest, and train new canes for next season's crop. Tip new primocanes at the desired height to encourage strong lateral branching, then shorten laterals in late winter to improve fruiting and keep the patch manageable. Harvest when berries are fully black and release easily; pick often during peak season for the best quality.
