Rudbeckia triloba 'Blackjack Gold' is a late-season workhorse that fills your garden with clouds of small, golden-yellow daisy flowers held on densely branched stems. The dark central cones create strong contrast, and the display builds from late summer into fall for weeks of color when many perennials are fading.
Plant it in full sun for the strongest stems and the heaviest bloom, but it will also perform in part shade (especially where summers are hot). In shadier conditions, you may want to tuck it among neighboring plants for support. Mature size is about 30-40 inches tall, with a tidy, clumping base that sends up multiple flowering stems.
You will get the best results in average, well-drained soil with moderate moisture, though it tolerates a wide range of soils and handles short dry spells once established. Water regularly during the first season to help it root in, then let the top of the soil dry slightly between waterings. A light mulch helps even out moisture and reduce stress during heat.
Because this plant is often a short-lived perennial or biennial, it commonly renews itself by self-seeding. If you want fewer volunteers, deadhead as flowers finish. If you want a naturalized look, let some seedheads mature for fall and winter interest, then cut stems back in late fall or early spring before new growth starts.
Use 'Blackjack Gold' to brighten mixed borders, cottage gardens, and native-style plantings. Combine it with ornamental grasses and other late bloomers for a long-season, pollinator-friendly finish.
