Grow Sempervivum 'Chick Charms® Berry Blues™' for clean, architectural color in a tiny footprint. This hens and chicks (houseleek) forms tight rosettes that shift from silvery blue to purple tones with rosy highlights, and it stays evergreen in many climates with good drainage.
Place it where water never lingers: a rock garden, gravel bed, crevice garden, green roof, or a pot with a gritty cactus mix. Full sun brings the best color, but it also performs in part shade, especially where summers run hot. Mature size is typically about 2-4 inches tall, with rosettes multiplying over time as offsets appear around the mother plant.
Water to establish, then let the soil dry between soakings. Overwatering and heavy, wet soils are the quickest way to lose plants. In containers, be extra cautious in winter: pots stay wetter and colder longer than ground plantings, so use a fast-draining mix and a container with a free-flowing drain hole.
After bloom, the flowering rosette will finish and die back, while the surrounding offsets continue the colony. Simply remove the spent rosette when it has dried. Divide and replant offsets any time you want to fill gaps or start new pockets of color.
Pair it with other drought-tolerant, sun-loving plants and stones for a low-maintenance display that looks good in every season.
