Skimmia japonica 'Male' is a shade-loving, broadleaf evergreen shrub grown for its glossy leaves and fragrant spring flower clusters. As a male plant, it provides abundant bloom and helps pollinate nearby female skimmias for berry set.
Plant it where you get morning sun and then dappled light or shade the rest of the day. In hot or exposed sites, full sun can scorch the leaves, so aim for part shade to full shade, especially in warmer regions. Choose rich, organic soil that stays evenly moist but drains well, and mulch to keep roots cool and reduce drying. Avoid letting the root zone dry out in summer, and provide extra water during extended heat or drought.
At maturity, you can expect a compact, mounded shrub about 36-48 inches tall with a similar spread, making it a strong choice for foundations, borders, containers, patios, and woodland edges. Prune lightly only as needed to shape after flowering; heavy pruning is rarely necessary. Site it out of drying winds for best winter leaf quality, and protect from harsh afternoon sun to keep foliage deep green. Like many skimmias, the fruits (on female plants) are considered poisonous if ingested.
