Foamflower (Tiarella cordifolia) brings a soft, woodland look to shaded beds with clouds of tiny white-to-pale pink flowers held on slender stalks above neat, heart-shaped leaves. You will get the best display in humus-rich soil that stays consistently moist but drains well, much like a forest floor. Plant it where it receives dappled light, partial shade, or even deep shade; in hotter sites, extra afternoon shade helps keep it looking fresh.

At maturity, it typically stays low (about 10-12 inches tall) and works well at the front of shade borders, along paths, and beneath deciduous trees. Depending on the form and site conditions, it can spread to knit into a groundcover by producing short runners and new plantlets, gradually filling gaps without becoming difficult to manage. Divide clumps in early spring or fall if you want to expand a planting or refresh older colonies.

Water regularly during establishment and during dry spells, especially in spring and early summer when new growth and flowering are most active. A light layer of leaf mold or compost will help conserve moisture and keep the root zone cool. Remove spent flower stalks if you prefer a tidier look, and trim away winter-worn foliage in early spring so the new leaves can shine.
