Veronicastrum virginicum (Culver's Root) is a bold, vertical native perennial that brings structure and a refined, meadow-like look to your planting. You will notice its distinctive whorled, lance-shaped leaves on sturdy, upright stems, followed by long, slender flower spikes made up of many tiny tubular blooms that open from the top down.
Give this plant room to stand tall. Mature height is typically 48-72 inches, making it ideal toward the back of a border, in a native planting, or as a repeating accent through a large bed. It pairs well with other prairie and meadow perennials and ornamental grasses, where its straight form adds contrast to looser, billowing textures.
For best performance, place Culver's Root in full sun and provide evenly moist, average to rich soil. It tolerates medium to wet conditions and is a strong choice for sites that stay consistently moist, including rain garden margins or low areas with good drainage. Keep soil from drying out during establishment for the strongest growth.
Once settled, maintenance is simple. Water during prolonged dry spells, and consider staking only if your site is very windy or if the soil is especially rich. Leave stems standing into winter for seasonal interest, then cut back in late winter or early spring before new growth appears.
