Train Wisteria frutescens 'Amethyst Falls' on a sturdy arbor, pergola, fence, or trellis for a showy cascade of fragrant lavender-purple bloom. This American wisteria is a well-behaved, deciduous, twining vine that is notably less aggressive than many Asian wisterias, making it easier to maintain in home landscapes.
Give it full sun for best flowering and plant it in moist, well-drained soil. Once established it tolerates some drought, but consistent moisture during the first season helps it root in well. Provide strong support from the start, and allow room for its mature size; the vine can reach about 25-30 ft tall and spread 10-15 ft wide when trained along a structure.
Flowers are produced on new growth, so winter pruning can be used to shape the plant and encourage blooms. Prune to control size, direct the twining stems where you want them, and remove weak or tangled growth. Enjoy the lightly fragrant racemes in late spring, with the possibility of lighter repeat flowering through summer in good conditions.
Use this vine to add vertical interest and pollinator appeal. It is known to attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and birds, and it can be grown as a specimen climber on an arbor or trained along wires on a wall. As with other wisterias, do not eat plant parts.
