Zizia aurea (golden alexanders) is an easy, early-season native perennial that lights up naturalistic plantings with flat-topped clusters of tiny yellow flowers. You will see the blooms held above fresh green, finely divided foliage in spring, with seed forming as the season progresses.

Plant it where you can enjoy the pollinator activity: the flowers are rich in nectar and pollen for a wide range of beneficial insects. It also works well as a supporting plant among grasses and other prairie or meadow perennials, adding bright color before many summer bloomers begin.

For best performance, give it full sun to part shade and soil that stays evenly moist in spring. Once established it can handle average conditions and some summer dryness, but it looks best with consistent moisture and good drainage. Expect mature clumps around 12-36 inches tall with a roughly 12-24 inch spread, depending on site and competition.

Let it naturalize if you have room. It can self-seed gently in favorable conditions, filling in open spots and creating a relaxed colony. Cut back spent stems after seed drop if you want to limit spreading, or leave some heads for a more natural look.
