Candytuft 'Snow Cone' {25 Pots - 3 1/2 in.}
Every gardener has one of those spots that they tend to neglect.
Iberis sempervirens, commonly called Candytuft, is not only perfect for these types of spots, it is virtually essential that every garden have a dollop of this lovely flowering
evergreen
groundcover. With her dark-green leaves (1- 1 1/2 inch long by 1/8- 1/4 inch wide) that promise to look great year-round and her puffs of pure
white
blooms (up to 2 inches across) that blanket the area in which they are growing from spring to early summer, you just can't beat her time-tested display.
Candytuft blooms sporadically throughout summer, especially if pruned or mowed (YES! You can mow it!) after its first flush of blooms fade. Candytuft hails from rock crevices on higher mountains in the Mediterranean region and adapts perfectly in North America as filler for crevices in walls, in rock gardens and borders. If you are the kind of person who prefers a 'plant it and forget it' approach, Candytuft is ideal because she actually thrives in poor soil and prefers rare watering. In fact, too much dampness is likely the only way you will harm her. Candytuft adapts to various soil types with good drainage; it is tolerant of drought, actually does best in full sun, and is moderately tolerant of salt. She spreads slowly to moderately fast, and her branches tend to take root wherever they touch the ground. Things To Note The variety we sell is 'Snow Cone', which is virtually identical to 'Snowflake' except it is fuller and slightly shorter. This plant is available for 25% off in our White Sunny Mix package. Interesting Facts Its common name (Candytuft) is not named for candy, but for Candia. In Crete, this is one of the southern European locales where it is a common wildflower. It was first cultivated in England in Elizabethan times and was sometimes known as Candy Thlaspy, Candy Turf, or Spanish Tuft. Specifications:
