With stunning metallic silvery blue, 1/2" wide grass-like foliage, Carex laxiculmis ‘Hobb’ (Bunny Blue ®) is a versatile native Sedge that is often used as a vibrant accent for smaller gardens or as an eye-catching groundcover in shady areas of borders or woodland gardens. Perfect for areas with moist soils such as low spots or on the edges of streams or ponds.

Reaching a mature height of only 12”, it spreads slowly to moderately quickly by rhizomes to form tidy clumps. Bunny Blue ® Sedge grows best in average soil that is evenly moist to wet. It prefers part shade to full shade, but will tolerate full sun full sun in northern zones with sufficient water. Soil should not be allowed to dry out, it needs consistent watering in hot summer weather.

Native to eastern North America, the vibrant blue foliage of ‘Hobb' is wider than most other Carex for superb texture and contrast with companions that are ordinary green. Tiny yellow flowers emerge in late spring but are not highly ornamental. Though evergreen in southern zones, plan to cut back the foliage in late winter to encourage fresh growth.

General information about Carex (Sedge):
Carex, a splendid Sedge, yields graceful arching foliage that bends and bows, creating a lush, green coverage of color like a fresh coat of paint. Often used as a bold accent, for borders and mass plantings, in containers, or as a groundcover in shade and rock gardens, Carex can also be planted along banks of ponds, incorporated into perennial gardens, grouped together, and utilized as a ground cover along walkways, paths or on sloping banks.

Carex is wonderful for erosion control, deer and disease resistant, long-lasting and easy to grow. Low-maintenance, non-invasive, and dense to the point of choking out weeds, Carex spreads by rhizomes (slowly in dry soils and moderately fast in wet soils).

An excellent alternative to ivy and Pachysandra, Carex produces small, cream to brown, bottlebrush-like flowers in late spring that are rather insignificant to the plant's ornamental value. Most ornamental sedges grow best in moist or wet soil, however we do offer Pennsylvania Sedge which is an exception to that rule.

As a complete lawn substitute, water feature plant, or simply a container at your front entrance, Carex will give a lush, tropical feeling to your garden.

Gardener Tips
Sedge looks its best when the foliage is cut back in late winter or early spring before new growth occurs.

Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system.

In northern zones, it does best when planted out of the way of winter winds and provided with some protection such as snow or straw.

You simply cannot go wrong pairing a large garden scape of Coreopsis and Carex. Even in potted plantings, the golden blossoms of Coreopsis are a lovely foil to any Sedge.

Product reviewed: Sedge Bunny Blue ® {3 1/2 in. Pots min 25}

I ordered 50 of these grasses to border my perennial garden in place of boxwood. They were delayed by about 3 weeks from my initial request for delivery, which actually was fine given we had freezing temps into mid May. They arrived in excellent shape and... Read full review >

Product reviewed: Sedge Bunny Blue ® {3 1/2 in. Pots min 25}

The plants arrived on time, packaged with care and looking perfectly healthy. They were packaged in a sturdy, waxed cardboard box, surrounded by newspaper. Much to my delight, it was evident the plants had been moistened but not drowned prior to packaging... Read full review >
