With stunning metallic silvery blue, 1/2" wide grass-like foliage, Carex laxiculmis ‘Hobb’ (Bunny Blue ®) is a versatile
native Sedge that is often used as a vibrant accent for smaller gardens or as an eye-catching groundcover in
shady areas of
borders or woodland gardens. Perfect for areas with
moist soils such as low spots or on the edges of streams or ponds.
Reaching a mature height of only 12”, it spreads
slowly to
moderately quickly by
rhizomes to form tidy
clumps. Bunny Blue ® Sedge grows best in average soil that is evenly moist to wet. It prefers
part shade to
full shade, but will tolerate full sun
full sun in northern zones with sufficient water. Soil should not be allowed to dry out, it needs consistent watering in hot summer weather.
Native to eastern North America, the vibrant blue foliage of ‘Hobb' is wider than most other Carex for superb texture and contrast with companions that are ordinary green. Tiny
yellow flowers emerge in late spring but are not highly ornamental. Though
evergreen in southern zones, plan to cut back the foliage in late winter to encourage fresh growth.
