Amelanchier canadensis (Canadian Serviceberry) is a native serviceberry grown as a large shrub or small, multi-stem tree for four-season interest and wildlife value. In early spring, you get airy clusters of white flowers before or as the foliage emerges, followed by berry-like fruit that ripens from red to deep purple-black and is edible. Leaves are medium to dark green through summer, then shift to orange-red tones in fall.

Plant it in full sun to part shade. In warmer climates, part shade can help keep it looking its best, especially if summer moisture is limited. Serviceberry is adaptable but performs best in consistently moist, well-drained soil, and it will also tolerate sites that are occasionally wet. Mulch to keep roots cool and even out moisture swings, and water regularly during establishment.

As it matures, expect a colony-forming habit with suckers. You can let it naturalize into a thicket for screening and habitat, or prune out suckers to maintain a neater outline and highlight a few main stems. Prune right after flowering if you need to shape or thin. This plant supports pollinators and is a host for butterflies; birds and other wildlife quickly find the fruit.

Use Canadian Serviceberry in woodland edges, rain-garden margins, naturalized plantings, and mixed borders where you want spring flowers, summer fruit, and reliable fall color in a single plant.
