Use Cotoneaster sal. 'Repandens' (Prostrate Willowleaf Cotoneaster 'Repandens') when you need a tough, low-growing shrub that covers ground quickly and adds multi-season interest. Its arching, prostrate branches create a fountain-like mat of narrow, glossy leaves that can be evergreen in mild winters and more semi-evergreen where winters are harsh.
In spring, you will see clusters of small white flowers along the stems, followed by showy red berries that can persist into colder weather. Mature plants typically stay about 12-18 inches tall while spreading 72-96 inches wide, making them a strong choice for banks, slopes, and larger groundcover spaces where you want a dense, uniform look.
Plant in full sun to part shade for best performance. Give it well-drained soil, and water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system. Once established, it handles occasional dry periods better than many groundcovers. Mulch lightly to reduce moisture loss and to keep weeds down while the plant fills in, keeping mulch off the main stems.
Prune after flowering or as needed to shape, thin, or remove wayward branches. On slopes, stagger plants to knit coverage, and avoid heavy fertilizing that can push soft growth. This shrub performs best with simple care: sun, drainage, and an occasional trim.
