Copper Bush Honeysuckle 'Copper' (Diervilla lonicera 'Copper') is a compact native shrub grown for its colorful foliage and easygoing nature. New growth emerges coppery to copper-red, then matures to green, and the plant can finish the season with warm reddish tones. In late spring into summer, you will also see small tubular yellow flowers that add a soft contrast to the foliage.
At maturity, expect a low, rounded habit around 24-36 inches tall with a broader spread that can reach about 36-48 inches. It is a good fit for the front of borders, along paths, or in mixed shrub plantings where you want dependable structure plus seasonal color without a large footprint.
Give it full sun to part shade. In cooler climates, more sun helps keep foliage color strongest; in hotter sites, a little afternoon shade can help reduce stress. This shrub tolerates a wide range of soils, including lean or clay soils, as long as drainage is reasonable. Water regularly during establishment; after that, aim for evenly moist to moderately dry conditions, and avoid keeping the soil constantly soggy.
Care is simple: prune in late winter or early spring if you want to reshape or reduce height, or lightly thin after flowering. It can spread by suckers over time, so you can either let it naturalize into a small colony or edge it occasionally to keep it within bounds.
