If you love the classic early-spring burst of forsythia but want a plant that fits smaller spaces, Forsythia × 'Show Off(R) Sugar Baby(R)' delivers. This compact, dwarf shrub covers its stems with bright yellow flowers in spring, then settles into a tidy mound of green foliage for the rest of the growing season. Its naturally small size makes it easy to use where traditional forsythias can feel too large.
At maturity, you can expect a height of about 18-30 inches, with a similar spread of about 18-30 inches. Use it to edge a walkway, brighten the front of a mixed border, or repeat it along a foundation planting for a low, spring-flowering accent. It also works well in groups to create a small hedge or to highlight early bulbs and other spring perennials.
Plant in full sun to part shade for best flowering. Choose a site with average moisture and well-drained soil; once established, it is adaptable to many garden soils as long as it is not constantly soggy. Water regularly during the first season to help roots establish, then water during extended dry spells as needed.
Because forsythias bloom on old wood, timing matters when you prune. If you want to shape the plant, do it right after flowering so you do not remove next year's buds. Every few years, you can thin out older stems near the base to keep the plant vigorous and blooming well.
