Wintergreen 'Winter Splash™' (Gaultheria procumbens 'Winter Splash™') is a compact, evergreen groundcover that brings tidy year-round foliage and bright winter interest to shady gardens. You will notice the classic wintergreen scent when the leaves are crushed, and in summer the plant produces small, bell-shaped white flowers followed by showy red berries that can persist into winter.

Give it the conditions it naturally prefers: an acidic soil that is rich in organic matter, evenly moist, and well-drained. In hot or dry sites, add leaf mold or fine bark to boost moisture-holding without making the soil heavy, then mulch to keep the root zone cool. Established plants can handle short dry spells, but consistent moisture produces the best growth and berry display.

Plant it in part shade to full shade, such as along a north-facing foundation, in a woodland bed, or beneath taller shrubs and trees where light is filtered. It stays low (about 4-6" tall) and spreads slowly over time. Space young plants about 10-14" apart if you want them to knit together into a groundcover patch.

This is a great choice when you want a small-scale groundcover that supports wildlife: the berries are valued by birds and other small animals. Use it in naturalized plantings, rock or woodland gardens, and containers where you can maintain the acidic, humus-rich soil it enjoys.

For a cohesive understory, pair it with other acid-loving companions such as lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium), huckleberry (Gaylussacia), partridge-berry (Mitchella), or mountain laurel (Kalmia).
