Magnolia liliflora 'Ann' (often sold as Magnolia 'Ann') is a Little Girl hybrid magnolia grown for its rich, tulip-like flowers and manageable size. You can expect goblet-shaped blooms in spring in deep pink to red-purple tones, often opening before or with the emerging leaves for a dramatic early-season display.
Plant it where you can enjoy the flowers up close and where it has room to mature to roughly 10-12 feet tall with a similar spread. Give it full sun to part shade; more sun generally means better flowering, while some afternoon shade can help in hotter exposures. Choose a site with moist, well-drained soil and avoid spots that stay soggy.
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system, then water during dry spells. A mulch ring helps conserve moisture and moderates soil temperature; keep mulch a few inches back from the trunk. Magnolias dislike root disturbance, so plan the location carefully and minimize digging around the base.
Prune only as needed to shape or remove dead or crossing branches, ideally soon after flowering so you do not remove next season's buds. Because flower buds can be affected by late frosts, a sheltered location out of harsh wind can help protect the display in spring.
