Physocarpus opulifolius 'Little Devil' is a compact, dark-leaved ninebark that brings season-long color to smaller landscapes. You get an upright, tidy shrub with fine-textured foliage that reads deep burgundy through much of the growing season, plus clusters of pale spring flowers that stand out against the leaves.
Plant it where you want reliable structure without a large footprint: mixed borders, foundation plantings, low hedges, or as a repeat element to tie beds together. Mature size is typically about 36-48 inches tall and it spreads to a similar width, so it can fill space without overwhelming nearby perennials or evergreens.
For the richest foliage color, give it full sun, though it also performs well in partial shade. Like most ninebarks, it is adaptable to a range of soils and is valued for toughness once established. Water regularly the first season to build a strong root system; afterward it handles short dry spells better than many ornamental shrubs.
Maintenance is straightforward. Prune just after flowering if you want to shape it, or remove a few of the oldest stems at the base to encourage fresh growth and keep the plant full. Pair it with lighter-foliaged plants and spring bloomers to highlight the dark leaves and extend interest through the season.
