You will notice the near-black to deep burgundy leaves early, followed by clusters of light spring flowers and decorative seed capsules. Mature plants typically reach about 48-60 inches tall with a rounded, branching habit, making it a strong choice for hedges, screens, and mixed shrub borders.

Plant it in full sun for the richest leaf color, though it also performs in partial shade. You can grow it in a wide range of soils, including clay or rocky sites, as long as drainage is reasonable. Water regularly during establishment; after that, it handles short dry spells and is also suitable for spots that stay more consistently moist, such as rain-garden edges and along swales.

For pruning, you can simply remove winter-damaged wood in late winter or early spring. If you want to control size or encourage fresh growth, prune right after flowering so you do not remove next season's buds. You can also thin a few of the oldest stems at the base to highlight the shrub's peeling bark and improve air flow through the plant.
