Norway spruce 'Abies' (Picea 'Abies') is an evergreen conifer grown for year-round structure, dark green needles, and the classic, pyramidal form associated with Norway spruce.
In the landscape, you can use it as a large specimen tree or as part of a screen or windbreak where space allows. As it matures, the branchlets can take on a graceful, slightly drooping look, and cones add seasonal interest.
Give your tree a site with full sun for best density and form. Choose soil that drains well and avoid low areas where roots may stay wet. In hot, humid summer regions, growth and appearance can decline, so this spruce is best in cooler climates.
Plan ahead for size: mature height is commonly in the 40 to 60 ft range, with a broad base. Water deeply during establishment and during extended dry spells, then mulch to moderate soil temperature and conserve moisture. Prune only as needed, focusing on removing damaged or crossing branches.
