Picea glauca 'Densata' (Black Hills Spruce 'Densata') is a dense, pyramidal evergreen selected for its uniform form and blue-green needles. You can use it as a specimen, screen, or windbreak where you want year-round structure and color. In maturity it typically reaches about 20-40 feet tall and 10-15 feet wide, so give it room to keep its natural shape.
Plant it in full sun for best density and color. Choose a site with moist, well-drained soil, and keep the root zone evenly moist while it establishes. Once rooted in, it handles normal seasonal dry spells better, but it does not like prolonged drought or hot, humid conditions. In warmer regions, avoid reflected heat from pavement and walls, and consider a cooler microclimate with good air movement.
Minimal pruning is needed. If you prune, do it lightly and only to correct stray branches or maintain a single leader, and avoid cutting back into bare old wood. Mulch helps moderate soil temperature and conserve moisture, but keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk. With steady moisture, sun, and space, this spruce becomes a long-lived, dependable evergreen for cold-winter landscapes.
