Use Prunus laurocerasus 'Otto Luyken' (Cherry Laurel 'Otto Luyken') when you want a tidy, broadleaf evergreen shrub that stays naturally compact. Its narrow, glossy green leaves create a dense, refined look year-round, and in spring the plant produces upright racemes of small, creamy-white flowers that can be noticeably fragrant.
Plant it in moist, well-drained soil and give it full sun to partial shade. It tolerates shade well (often appreciating some afternoon protection in hotter climates), and it responds nicely to pruning. If you need to shape it or keep it tight for a low hedge or foundation planting, prune after flowering to preserve next season's display and avoid constant shearing that can mar the foliage.
At maturity, expect a low, spreading habit around 36-48 inches tall with a wider spread, making it useful for borders, massing, or screening at window height. Dark fruits may follow bloom, but the plant is grown primarily for its evergreen structure and spring flowers.
Note: like many laurels, parts of the plant can be poisonous if ingested, so site it thoughtfully where children and pets are a concern.
