Prunus maritima (beach plum) is a rugged, coastal shrub valued for spring flowers, wildlife-friendly fruit, and tolerance of salty, windy sites. You can use it as an informal hedge, naturalized thicket, or dune-friendly planting where tougher shrubs are needed. Mature size is typically about 6-7 ft tall and 6-7 ft wide, with a dense, multi-stemmed habit.

Plant it in full sun to part shade for the best flowering and fruiting. It grows well in well-drained soils and is especially well-suited to sandy coastal ground. Once established, it handles exposed conditions and salt spray better than many fruiting shrubs. Water regularly during establishment; after that, provide occasional deep watering during extended dry spells.

In mid-spring, clusters of white flowers open along the branches, followed by small plums that ripen in late summer. The fruit is edible and can be used fresh or cooked. For the most reliable fruit set, plant more than one genetically different plant (or cultivar) nearby to improve pollination.

Prune right after flowering if you need to manage size or encourage a fuller outline. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing stems anytime. This shrub is adaptable, but it performs best when given space to spread and when competing weeds are kept back from the root zone.
