Use Schizachyrium scoparium 'Prairie Winds® 'Blue Paradise' when you want a strong, upright little bluestem that looks great from summer through winter. Its narrow blades emerge with a silvery to steel-blue cast, then shift to rich burgundy and wine tones as the season cools. Airy tan seedheads rise above the foliage, and the clump holds its form well into winter for lasting texture and movement.
Give it full sun for best color and the most upright habit. Plant in well-drained soil; it is adaptable to many soil types, including lean or sandy sites, as long as drainage is good. Water regularly the first season to establish, then let it dry slightly between soakings; once established it handles drought well and typically needs only occasional supplemental water during extended dry spells.
At maturity it reaches about 36-42 inches tall and forms a tidy, fountain-to-column clump that pairs easily with perennials and other grasses. Use it in borders, prairie-style plantings, and meadows, or tuck it into mixed containers for vertical accent. Leave the foliage standing for winter interest, then cut it back close to the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth starts.
Little bluestem is a North American native grass that adds seasonal color and habitat value. The standing stems and seedheads add structure in fall and winter, and the clump creates cover that can be useful to wildlife. Keep mulch pulled back from the crown to reduce rot and encourage strong spring regrowth.
