Taxus media 'Hicksii' (Hicks Yew 'Hicksii') is a classic, narrow evergreen for privacy screens, clipped hedges, and upright accents. You get dense, dark green needles on a naturally columnar plant that responds well to pruning and shaping.
Plant it in full sun, part shade, or shade. For best long-term performance, choose a site with well-drained soil and avoid spots that stay wet, especially in winter. Water regularly the first season to establish roots; once established, it handles dry spells better than many broadleaf evergreens.
At maturity it commonly reaches about 120-180 inches tall, with a tighter footprint than many screening shrubs. Use it as a foundation plant, line it up for a formal hedge, or place a few as vertical punctuation in mixed beds. It can be sheared for a crisp outline or lightly pruned to keep a more natural look.
To maintain density, prune in late winter to early spring before strong new growth begins, and avoid cutting into old bare wood unless you are intentionally renovating. Keep mulch a few inches away from the stems for airflow. Like other yews, parts of the plant are toxic if eaten, so site it thoughtfully around pets and children.
