Give your garden a productive, ornamental shrub with Vaccinium corymbosum 'Blueray' (highbush blueberry). In spring, you get clusters of small, waxy white flowers; in summer, you can harvest firm, flavorful blue berries; and in fall, the foliage colors up in rich red tones.

Plant in acidic, organically rich, consistently moist but well-drained soil, and keep the root zone mulched to protect the shallow, fibrous roots. Full sun gives the strongest growth and best fruiting, but part shade is also workable. Mature size is typically about 72-84 inches tall with a similar spread, and plants can be kept smaller with regular pruning.

For heavier crops and larger berries, plant more than one cultivar that blooms at the same time to improve pollination. Prune in late winter once established to remove older wood and keep the shrub open for light and air. Netting may be needed as fruit ripens because birds enjoy the berries, too.
