Plant Vaccinium corymbosum 'Patriot' for an ornamental edible that looks good all season and rewards you with dependable fruit. In spring, you get bell-shaped white blooms, followed by medium blue berries that ripen early to mid-season. In fall, the foliage shifts to attractive red and purple tones for extra landscape interest.
Give your plant full sun for best flowering and fruiting, and choose a consistently moist, well-drained site. Because blueberries are shallow-rooted, steady moisture is more important than deep soaking. Mulch with pine needles, shredded bark, or other organic material to help conserve moisture and protect the roots from temperature swings.
Blueberries prefer acidic soil. If your soil is naturally neutral or alkaline, you will get better long-term results by amending and testing before planting, or by growing in a large container with an acid-loving plant mix. Avoid planting where drainage is poor, and do not let the root zone dry out completely during summer heat.
'Patriot' is self-fertile, but you will usually harvest larger berries and heavier crops when you plant a second highbush blueberry cultivar that blooms at the same time. Prune in late winter beginning around year three, removing weak, crossing, or older canes to keep the shrub productive and easy to pick. Protect ripening fruit from birds with netting as needed. USDA Zones 5-7.
